PINE TREE REMOVAL in NYC

The needles on your pine went orange from the inside out, and now there’s fine sawdust at the base of the trunk. It’s a tall, thin tree standing close to the house, and every winter storm makes you nervous. A pine in that state doesn’t get better, and a top-heavy one can snap when snow and ice load up on the crown.

GreenLeaf Tree Care takes down white, Austrian, pitch, Scots and red pines across the five boroughs of NYC, plus Yonkers, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk County. Our team is local, licensed and fully insured, and a tree risk assessment can tell you how urgent your tree is. The estimate is free and in person, so you’ll know the risk before you decide anything, and there’s no obligation to book.

How to identify a pine tree in NYC

Pines hold long needles in bundles, from two on Austrian, Scots and red pine to five on white pine, and they stay green year-round. The bark is scaly or plated, and cones hang from the branches.

Most grow tall and straight with a narrow trunk.

Pests, snow load and tall trunks

Pests on Long Island pines

Southern pine beetle and red pine scale have both been pests on Long Island pines. Beetles tunnel under the bark, and heavily infested trees can die fast. Once the crown turns colour, the tree usually can’t be saved, and a dead pine is better down before it drops parts of itself.

Tip blight on Austrian pines

Diplodia tip blight is common on Austrian pines. It shows up as browning new growth, and repeated years of it weaken the tree. It isn’t always fatal, but a pine with dead tips and other problems, like resin streams or sawdust, deserves a careful look from an arborist.

Top-heavy and prone to snapping

Tall, thin trunks with heavy crowns give wind and wet snow a lot to work on. Pines can snap partway up the trunk in storms, and ice load makes it worse. That’s a serious concern when the tree stands near a house, a garage or a shared fence.

Dead pines drop heavy branches

Dead pine limbs turn dry and heavy, and they let go without warning. Working in one means cutting oily wood in a tree that sheds branches, so we plan each cut before anyone climbs, and we keep the drop zone clear of people and property.

How to tell a pine is failing

  • Needles browning from the top or the inside of the crown
  • Orange or brown needles across most of the tree
  • Resin tubes or streams of sap on the trunk
  • Fine sawdust piled at the base
  • Bark peeling off in patches
  • Brown, dying tips on new growth

Removing a pine, resin and all

Pitch coats ropes, gloves and saws, and dead branches can break off under a climber’s weight. We remove tall pines from the top down in short sections, and bring in crane and rigging capability when the tree stands close to a building or over a tight yard.

A pine won’t resprout from the stump the way a hardwood does, so grinding is about appearance and space. It’s an extra choice, quoted separately.

  • Estimate visit to check the trunk, crown and surroundings
  • Plan the drop zone and rigging points
  • Take the top and dead limbs off in controlled sections
  • Lower the trunk pieces and clear the resin-heavy debris
  • Haul away everything, and grind the stump if you ask

Tall pines beside close neighbours

In the city and its suburbs, pines often stand near houses, garages, wires and fences, with barely room to swing a rope. Access shapes the whole job. If the tree sits on a street or public property, you’ll need an NYC Parks permit, and we handle the permit through our tree permit service.

Storm season is when pines get expensive. If a trunk has snapped or a big limb is hanging, call for same-day emergency service. Property managers get before-and-after photos on request.

FAQs

No. Conifers don’t resprout from a stump the way hardwoods do. Grinding the stump is still worth considering for the space and appearance, and we quote it as a separate choice, so you only pay for it if you want it.

Not always. Tip blight can brown new growth on Austrian pines without killing the tree. But needles browning from the inside or across the whole crown, especially with resin and sawdust, points to a bigger problem that needs a proper look.

It burns fast and resinous, so it’s not ideal for indoor fireplaces because of creosote buildup. Seasoned pine is fine for an outdoor fire pit. Tell us at the estimate if you’d like the wood cut up and left behind.

Fine sawdust near the trunk often means insects are boring into the tree. Combined with sap streams or resin tubes on the bark, it’s a warning worth an arborist’s visit soon, before the crown starts to brown.

Yes. Tall, thin trunks with top-heavy crowns are prone to snapping in wind and under snow or ice load. A pine close to a building is worth assessing before winter, not after the first big storm.

We plan around utilities on every job, and we look at wires and access during the free estimate. Where lines are involved we’ll explain the approach before any work starts, so you know what to expect on the day.
