Oak Tree Removal
OAK TREE REMOVAL in NYC
An old oak is a gift until one of its limbs is the size of a car and hangs directly over your roof. In Queens, on Staten Island and across the Long Island suburbs, many oaks have been growing for generations, and their weight is the real issue. When something goes wrong, there’s a lot of tree to go wrong.
GreenLeaf Tree Care takes down oaks that are declining, damaged or simply too heavy for the space, for homeowners and commercial properties across the five boroughs, Yonkers, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk County. Our family-owned crew has over 40 years of experience, and we use crane and rigging when a big oak calls for it. See our tree removal page for the full picture.

How to identify an oak tree in NYC
Oak leaves are usually lobed, with rounded lobes on white oaks and bristle-tipped points on red and black oaks. The leaves alternate along the twig rather than sitting in pairs. Then look for acorns, the clearest giveaway, though a young or stressed tree may not drop any.
The bark helps too. White oak tends toward pale, scaly plates, while red and black oaks have darker, deeply furrowed ridges. Mature oaks in the city have wide, spreading crowns and thick lower limbs. If you can’t tell them apart, we’ll do it at your free estimate, since it changes how we plan the work.
What makes a big oak risky, and when timing matters
Heavy limbs over houses and cars
An oak’s strength is also its danger. Horizontal limbs get long and heavy, and a crack near the trunk can send a huge load of wood onto a roof or driveway. Older trees with past storm damage or poor pruning cuts are the ones we worry about most.
Oak wilt and the pruning window
Oak wilt has been confirmed in parts of the state, and the fungus spreads through sap beetles that are drawn to fresh cuts. So we avoid pruning live oaks in the spring and early summer when those beetles are active. Emergency removals are the exception, because safety comes first.
Borers and defoliation
Two-lined chestnut borer attacks oaks that are already stressed, and spongy moth (formerly gypsy moth) defoliation weakens a tree’s reserves. Neither is always fatal by itself. Combined with drought or compacted soil, they can push a mature oak into a decline it won’t come back from.
Decay you can’t see from the ground
Oaks can look healthy from the curb while the trunk is hollow inside. Conks, cracks and heaved soil are the outside clues to inside trouble. A tree risk assessment is the best way to learn whether yours is sound before a storm decides it for you.
Warning signs an oak is failing
- Mushrooms or conks growing at the base
- Cracks in the trunk or at major limb unions
- A hollow sound when you tap the trunk
- Leaves browning suddenly in the middle of summer
- Dead branches scattered through the crown
- Soil heaved up or cracked on one side

How we bring down a large oak without damaging your property
Oak wood is dense, and a single limb can weigh more than you’d guess. So we don’t just cut and drop. A big oak gets a plan for every section, including where it lands, how it’s lowered and what protects the lawn, the roof and the fence below.
When there’s space for a crane, we use it to lift heavy sections straight out. When there isn’t, we use careful sectional rigging with controlled lowering.
- Free in-person estimate and species check
- Choose crane lift or sectional rigging for the site
- Lower heavy limbs in planned sections
- Take the trunk down in pieces and haul away the debris
- Optional stump grinding as a separate choice
Oak work around NYC homes, fences and power lines
Older oaks in Queens and on Staten Island often sit close to houses, garages and overhead wires, which limits where a crane can set up. On Long Island suburban lots the oak may be just as big, but access can be wider. We look at both the tree and the site before we promise a method.
If the oak stands on a street or public property, an NYC Parks permit is required, and our tree permit service files it for you. After a storm, a split oak is an emergency, and we offer same-day service. For commercial sites, before-and-after photos are available on request.
FAQs
For live oaks, we avoid pruning in the spring and early summer, when sap beetles are active and oak wilt can spread through fresh cuts. Outside that window is safer. If the tree is dangerous, though, emergency removal takes priority, and we’ll go ahead at any time of year.
A sudden browning of leaves in summer is a warning sign. It can look like drought stress, so it’s worth a professional look. Oak wilt is confirmed in parts of the state, so don’t guess if a tree changes fast. Call us and we’ll inspect it.
Not always, but they’re a red flag. Mushrooms or conks at the base often point to decay in the roots or lower trunk. Have an arborist inspect it, because decay can weaken an oak’s hold on the ground long before the crown looks bad.
Often for big or heavy trees, yes, particularly when the limbs overhang a house or the wood is questionable. If a crane can’t reach the site, we use sectional rigging instead. We’ll explain which one fits during your free estimate.
One bad year usually won’t kill a healthy oak, but repeated defoliation weakens it and can open the door to borers like the two-lined chestnut borer. If your oak has been stripped several summers in a row and now shows dead branches, have it checked.
Yes. Cleanup and debris haul-away come with the job. Stump grinding is available too, quoted as a separate choice, so you can decide. See stump removal for how that works.
