MAPLE TREE REMOVAL in NYC
Your sidewalk is lifting, the roots are creeping toward the pipes, and a maple that was a cute sapling is now blocking the light. Or maybe it dropped a big limb last storm, and you’re wondering what’s next. Maples are everywhere in NYC, and not every one is a keeper. This page covers what to look for and what removal involves.
GreenLeaf Tree Care removes maples that are weak, decayed, root-damaged or simply in the wrong place, for homes and commercial properties in the five boroughs, Yonkers, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk County. We’re a local, family-owned company, and you get a free in-person estimate before anything is decided. Our tree removal crews handle it start to finish, including cleanup and debris haul-away.

How to identify a maple tree in NYC
Maples have opposite branching and hand-shaped leaves with lobes and points. Norway maple leaves are broad and drip milky sap when the stem is snapped. Silver maple leaves are deeply cut with silvery undersides. Red maples have shorter, toothed lobes, and sugar maples have smooth-edged ones.
The seeds are a clue too. Maples drop paired winged seeds, often called helicopters. Bark varies: silver maple peels in shaggy strips, Norway is firmly ridged. If you’re not sure which species you have, we’ll tell you on site, because each one fails in its own way.
Four ways maples cause trouble on NYC properties
Norway maple: shade and stubborn roots
Norway maple is one of the most common street and yard trees here. Its dense shade kills grass beneath it, and its surface roots spread wide. It’s also prone to girdling roots that wrap the trunk and slowly choke the tree, often leaving it to fail years later.
Silver maple: fast growth, weak wood
Silver maple grows quickly, and that speed costs it strength. The wood is brittle, so limbs tear off in storms. Its roots also travel far, reaching pipes and pavement. A large one close to the house, with weak wood above and aggressive roots below, is worth a professional opinion.
Asian longhorned beetle awareness
Asian longhorned beetle has been found in the NYC area, and it’s a reportable pest. Look for perfectly round exit holes about 3/8 inch wide, roughly pencil size, and sawdust-like frass. If you see them, report it to the authorities and don’t move the wood. Call us and we’ll help you with next steps.
Verticillium wilt and structural flaws
Red and sugar maples can get verticillium wilt, which kills branches suddenly. Tar spot, by comparison, is cosmetic. Structural defects matter more: tight V-shaped crotches with included bark, multiple leaders, and trunk decay are what actually bring maples down.
How to tell a maple is on its way out
- Tight V-shaped crotches with bark pinched inside
- Two or more competing leaders
- Girdling roots circling the base
- Soft or crumbling decay in the trunk
- Sidewalk or driveway slabs lifting nearby
- Perfectly round exit holes and sawdust-like frass

How we remove a maple, roots and weak wood included
Maples fail differently from one species to the next, so we start by reading the wood. A brittle silver maple gets more care about where the crew puts its weight, while a Norway with girdling roots gets a careful look at the base before cutting begins.
We work in sections, rigging heavy limbs down rather than dropping them near pipes, paving and neighbors. If we suspect Asian longhorned beetle, we stop and point you to the right authorities instead of moving suspect wood.
- Free in-person estimate and species check
- Inspect the base, roots and crotches for decay
- Rig and lower limbs in sections
- Take down the trunk and haul away all debris
- Grind the stump if you want, priced as a separate choice
Maples on NYC sidewalks, lots and shared boundaries
So many NYC maples are street trees, and that changes the rules. Anything on the street or public property needs an NYC Parks permit, and our tree permit service files it for you. On private lots, we work around fences, utilities and close neighbors, and we talk with you about roots that may be near pipes.
After a storm, a split silver maple is an emergency, and we offer same-day service. For property managers, we provide before-and-after photos on request for commercial jobs, and a Certificate of Insurance is available too. Have a leaning maple you’re unsure about? Ask for a risk assessment.
FAQs
Silver maple wood is fast-growing but brittle, so limbs break in storms and even in calm weather when they’re overloaded. If it keeps happening, or you see cracks and decay, have an arborist inspect it. Sometimes pruning helps, and sometimes removal is the safer call.
Yes. Girdling roots wrap around the trunk base and squeeze the tree over the years, cutting off water and stability. Norway maples are known for it. The tree can look fine, then fail suddenly. A trunk that goes straight into the ground with no flare at the base is a warning.
Perfectly round holes about 3/8 inch wide, plus sawdust-like frass, can point to Asian longhorned beetle. It’s reportable, so contact the authorities and don’t move or cut up the wood yourself. We can help you with the next steps.
No. Tar spot leaves black blotches on the leaves and looks bad, but it’s cosmetic. Sudden branch dieback is more concerning, since it can signal verticillium wilt. If you’re unsure which one you’re seeing, we’ll take a look at the tree.
They can, especially silver maple, whose roots reach pipes and pavement, and Norway maple, with its surface roots. Lifting slabs near a big maple are a good reason to book an inspection. We’ll tell you whether removal makes sense.
Yes. A maple on the street or public property needs an NYC Parks permit, and we file it through our tree permit service. Call us with the address and we’ll tell you what’s required for your tree.
