ELM TREE REMOVAL in NYC

Maybe one branch on your elm turned yellow in July while the rest of the tree looked fine. Or the bark is loosening and you’re wondering how much time the tree has left. Either way, a dying elm isn’t only your problem. Its dead bark is where elm bark beetles breed, and those beetles carry Dutch elm disease to the healthy elms nearby.

GreenLeaf Tree Care removes elms across the five boroughs of NYC, plus Yonkers, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk County. Our ISA Certified Arborists confirm what’s wrong first, then take the tree down safely and handle the wood the right way. Book a free in-person estimate and you’ll get a straight answer on whether the tree can stay, and what happens to the wood if it goes.

How to identify an elm tree in NYC

Mature American elms have a vase shape: a trunk that splits low into heavy limbs arching up and outward to a wide, spreading canopy. Look for leaves with a lopsided base and a double-toothed edge.

Older elms often stand along streets and beside buildings, with big limbs over roofs and roots sharing space with the sidewalk. If you’re not sure of the species, we’ll tell you when we visit.

What makes a sick elm a problem for the whole block

Dutch elm disease spreads through beetles

The fungus is carried by elm bark beetles. Dead and dying elm bark is where they breed, so an infected tree left standing keeps feeding the problem. Prompt removal of an infected elm helps protect neighbouring elms, which is why we don’t advise waiting out a diagnosis.

Elm yellows can look the same from the street

Elm yellows, also called phloem necrosis, is another cause of sudden decline. From the sidewalk it can look a lot like Dutch elm disease, so guessing rarely works. An arborist looking at the crown and the wood can tell you which way to go.

Dead limbs on a very large tree

An elm’s arching limbs are heavy and wide. Once the wood dies it dries out and can drop without warning, over a driveway, a parked car, a sidewalk or a neighbour’s roof. The bigger the canopy, the more that matters, and old street elms have some of the biggest canopies in the city.

Firewood that spreads the beetles

Bark-on elm firewood shouldn’t be stored or moved, because beetles can still use it. Infected wood needs to be chipped or hauled away, not left stacked in a corner of the yard where it becomes a nursery. That’s why we take the wood off site ourselves rather than leaving it for you.

Warning signs on an elm

  • One branch wilts, yellows and browns in summer while the rest looks healthy (flagging)
  • Flagging that spreads branch by branch through the crown
  • Brown streaks in the wood under the bark of a cut twig
  • Bark that’s dead and loosening from the trunk
  • Small holes or beetle galleries under peeling bark
  • Sudden thinning or early leaf drop with no clear cause

How we take down an infected elm

With elms, disposal matters as much as the cut. We work the tree down in sections, lowering heavy limbs on ropes so nothing lands on a roof, a fence or a neighbour’s garden. Large or awkward trees can call for crane and rigging support.

Infected wood is chipped or hauled off, never stacked on site. Stump grinding is available as a separate choice, and we haul away the debris either way.

  • Free in-person estimate and a look at the crown and bark
  • Site check for lines, structures and access
  • Sectional removal with controlled rigging
  • Chipping or haul-away of all elm wood
  • Cleanup, with stump grinding if you want it

Elm removal on tight NYC lots

Many elms in the city sit right on the property line or at the curb. Street trees and trees on public property need an NYC Parks permit, and our tree permit service files it for you. Alongside that, we plan around overhead wires and narrow access.

Big elms near buildings sometimes call for a second opinion first, and a tree risk assessment can help. If a limb has already failed, same-day emergency service is available.

FAQs

In most cases, yes. Infected trees don’t recover, and the dead bark breeds beetles that can reach healthy elms nearby. An arborist should look first, and if removal is the right call we’ll say so plainly.

Not with the bark on. Elm firewood with bark can still host beetles and shouldn’t be stored or moved. Infected wood is chipped or hauled off, and we take care of that as part of the job.

Flagging, where one branch yellows and browns while the rest looks normal, is a classic sign. Brown streaking under the bark of a cut twig also points to disease. It’s worth having a certified arborist check.

Street trees and trees on public property need an NYC Parks tree work permit. GreenLeaf files it through our tree permit service, so you don’t have to work through the paperwork yourself. If you’re not sure whose tree it is, ask us at the estimate.

They can be. Beetles breeding in dead bark can carry the fungus onward. Removing an infected tree promptly helps protect the remaining elms on the block, which is often the deciding reason to act, especially where old elms still line the street.

Yes, if you’d like. Stump grinding is a separate choice, so you’re not paying for it unless you want it. We’ll cover it during the free estimate and quote both options, so you can compare the removal alone with the removal plus grinding.
